Dear users, dear authors,
leggings are so trendy right now that they’re supposedly even giving the all-time classic, jeans, a run for its money. What do you think of leggings? What do you wear with them? Who doesn’t like leggings at all?
I really like black leggings; I generally like anything that’s simple in cut, stretchy, and form-fitting. But I only allow myself the freedom to walk around in leggings at home (or maybe to the trash can at most, but no further :-)). To go out in public in leggings and feel comfortable doing so, my legs would have to be a bit more toned—and they’re not there yet. I’m much more lenient when it comes to other people, and as long as they aren’t completely out of shape (I mean, both the people and the leggings), then it’s fine by me—but the butt absolutely has to be covered, whether with a skirt, T-shirt, or sweater—I don’t care which. I only think it’s okay to show your butt in leggings when exercising; otherwise, no—unless you have a really gorgeous, toned butt, but very few people do :-). And if you absolutely must show your butt, then at least make sure the leggings are opaque: I think it looks awful when underwear—especially patterned ones—shows through.
I generally don’t think printed leggings are pretty, but there are exceptions.
What I really love, though, are knitted leggings with really colorful horizontal stripes—I’d love to wear something like that if I were 20 years younger :-).
My daughter won’t leave the house without them. She’s 7, and her favorite pair is a pair of pink leggings with pink glittery stars. Her other pairs are just as “subtle.”
Personally, I love them as ski underwear, or the thin ones as a substitute for tights under pants. But I wouldn’t want to wear them like that in public—I don’t feel comfortable doing so. Even though I really like them. Especially the polka-dot and checkered ones—I have a soft spot for those.
Maybe the day will come when I’ll take the plunge and wear a pair under a denim skirt. Because on that point, I agree with Inna’s pattern shop: my butt in leggings would definitely still be covered.
I love leggings!
However, since I (still! ;-) ) don’t have the ideal figure for leggings and don’t want to subject the people around me to that, I only wear them under a veeeery long top or a skirt. :-)
I love them, but unfortunately, they don’t love me...
Leggings are cut very tight around the ankles, so they look really unflattering on me. For them to fit, I’d have to wear them two sizes larger... but then I’d need suspenders. Unfortunately, I’m too thin around the waist for that. And yet they’re super comfortable. My daughter wears nothing but leggings and, luckily for her, she’s allowed to wear them to work too. She always wears a longer top over them.
Something I didn’t like even 20 years ago: leggings all the time, everywhere—shopping, at the hair salon, or at the doctor’s. People were always wearing leggings. In my opinion, it’s not absolutely necessary, but maybe I’m just a bit old-fashioned in that regard (or “spoiled”)
Best, Sabine
I didn’t like them back then, and I don’t like them now.
To me, leggings always have that “Peggy Bundy” (who still remembers her? ;-) ) vibe. I can still remember all too well those tacky leopard-print monstrosities you’d see on the high street, and I’m not sure I want to see that again. ;-)
I wore leggings back in the ’80s, too—they were colorful and affordable for students. And back then, I still had the legs to pull them off. Today? No way. Tights under fairly short skirts, sure. Leggings as a substitute for pants? Adult women should steer clear of that. That’s my take ;-)
I think they’re okay for girls, but our daughter never wears them to school—it has to be jeans there.
I own some myself, but I actually only wear them in the winter under jeans or pants as a substitute for tights. I really didn’t like the “black leggings with a denim skirt” trend. I also find those wildly patterned ones you sometimes see around town pretty awful. The top should definitely cover the butt.
You also often see young girls who are very out of shape wearing leggings, but I don’t think that’s a fashion statement—it’s just more comfortable because regular pants squeeze their stomachs too much and might even hurt them....
I like treggings best. They’re not as tight-fitting as leggings, but just as comfortable. With a long top, you can hide a little belly fat underneath pretty well. And you look “dressed” in them. Since I’m very tall, though, they’re often too short for me. But they look pretty okay with boots.
