Change size

Can anyone help? I bought a knitting pattern for a gorgeous Icelandic sweater, but unfortunately it was only available in size S, and I actually need a size M (for my husband). Is there a way to scale up the pattern by one size? It’s a sweater.If that doesn’t work, I’ll have to make my husband shrink (difficult) or wear the sweater myself (he’ll be jealous). What if I just use thicker knitting needles? Thanks for your help! Kerstin

Hi Kerstin Hippel,
using thicker yarn and larger knitting needles will definitely let you knit a slightly larger size, but I’m not sure if that’s enough to make it a whole size bigger. Hopefully the authors will be able to weigh in on this.

Hi Kerstin, you’ll need to do a gauge swatch with the yarn you’ve chosen. Then calculate how many stitches you’ll need for your husband’s size—ideally using one of his well-fitting sweaters. Then you can see if you can get the pattern repeat to line up correctly.
