Dear users, dear authors,
how much wool do you actually use on average per month, year, or day?
You can specify this in skeins or by yardage—whichever you prefer.
If you’d like to break it down by color, feel free to do so. :- )
Good grief—dear Josefa, do you knit yourself??? That makes me smile, and then burst into a fit of laughter....
Let me try to explain: I’m currently knitting a shawl using lace yarn with a yardage of 400 m/50 g. Yesterday I bought yarn for a jacket for my daughter that has a yardage of 70 m/100 g. So I can only make a rough estimate!
On average, I figure 2–3 weeks for a large project and 1,500–2,000 m of yarn. Roughly speaking, that works out to 18–20 major projects per year with a total length of 30,000–40,000 m (not including small projects like scarves, infinity scarves, and Möbius scarves).
I can’t get much more precise than that, because I haven’t kept track, and of course I don’t know what the coming year will bring.
When it comes to yarn, I have no idea. My current stash is about 300 skeins, and I’m constantly buying and crocheting. How much have I used up? According to my family, tons...
It’s easy to lose track.
It’s easier with stuffing. I’ve used a good 12 kg of it this year.
At first, I was really amazed—I mean, some people can actually estimate it. For my last three projects, I can say that it was 20 skeins of 50 grams each. But those were the bigger projects. For little things like the rattle toys, flowers, or other small items, I use up the leftovers. But when I do the math, it works out to one skein for every two animals.
My daughter’s big dragon has used up 8 skeins so far, but I’m not done with it yet.
So, all in all—NO, I can’t even estimate it!
But I think it’s a great idea. Starting January 1, 2017, I’ll weigh and tally it up for a whole year. I’m really curious. Multiply that by 7, and I’ll know how much I’ve used since my daughter was born.
I actually did the math on this. Since I always list the yardage in my project posts, I can at least come up with an approximate figure.
If I add up the yarn used in all the patterns I’ve created this year, I’ve used about 7,000 meters of yarn just for those. That doesn’t include the current project I’m working on or the one whose pattern is still being tested.
Also not included are the many “goodies” I’ve knitted and crocheted over the course of the year. If I factor all of these items in, I’ve used about 9,000 meters of yarn this year, as of October.
That’s quite a substantial number, I think. ☺
