Fall 2016 trend: Plaid patterns (no advertising thread)

Plaid patterns are in style this fall and winter. Is it actually possible to create nice plaid patterns when crocheting, knitting, and knooking?

Of course, you can do that really well. Checks don’t always have to be woven. There are specific knitting and crochet techniques you can use to imitate the checked effect really well. Solid colors are naturally the easiest, but multicolor is a real hit!

(And quite apart from that, this thread gave me an idea, Josefa. ;-) I’m off to start tinkering right away...)

I love checks. They’re also easy to recreate in crochet for blankets and shawls, even with granny squares.

I’ve never tried knitting them, but that could still change.

Yes, definitely, and there are many ways to do it!

For example:

• you can create them in knitting using purl and knit stitches; 
  
• it can be made as a lace pattern; 
  
• you can create it using the jacquard technique; 
  
• using two or more colors, you can crochet or knit checkered patterns with stitches worked into lower rows, provided each row is worked in only one color—this is easier than a jacquard pattern; 
  
• Entrelac is also a technique used to knit or crochet checkered patterns; 
  
• the pattern can also be knitted or crocheted using the same method as cables, which gives it a voluminous look.
