Crochet Patterns for Characters from Ice Age

Hi,

I haven’t been crocheting for very long. As a thank-you gift, I crocheted a Minion for my friend.
She was so thrilled that she asked me if I could also make her a character from Ice Age, like Scrat the squirrel or Sid the sloth.
Unfortunately, I can only find patterns in English, and I can’t understand them—or translate them so I can understand them—at all.
Does anyone happen to have a pattern like that they could share with me, or know where I can find one in German?

Thanks so much in advance.

Best regards, Heike

Hello Heike,
I’m afraid I have to tell you that all these characters are protected by trademark law. Anyone who provides a pattern here, whether free of charge or for a fee, would be breaking the law. This also applies to the Minion figures, by the way. It’s well known that many people ignore this. However, these authors also risk receiving cease-and-desist letters, reportedly in the four-digit range. Everyone has to decide that for themselves, but the internet never forgets, and I, like many other authors, would never dare to do that. That’s why you’ll find few, if any, patterns here.

What you are of course allowed to do is make the figure for yourself or give it away as a gift. Maybe you’ll find a similar pattern and can adapt it.

Thanks for the reply.
I don’t want to share the patterns or make money off them (or off the figures, for that matter), but I didn’t realize it was illegal :(
Still, thanks for the info—I’ll just make her a squirrel ;) Maybe I’ll even manage to add some teeth to it.

Thank you so much

It wasn’t about you sharing patterns, but that was the reason why you can find very few—if any—patterns on the topic :)

Copyright law does not apply to design rights, which is what a knitted/crocheted work or a pattern for crocheting or knitting a figure based on Disney and the like would be. A distinction should be made, because it is not specifically listed in American or German copyright law, as it would have to be in order to be punishable. That is why these exist in the first place, and nothing can be done about it; otherwise there would be none at all. That is why these patterns are usually in English, and the German translations are then mostly with the permission of the foreign-language designer of the pattern, since it is that designer’s intellectual property. The intellectual property of this pattern lies solely with the designer of the pattern/design, so the pattern can be sold or made available for free....That should be kept separate...Licensed product/right, yes, but it does not apply to design rights; the right to that lies with the designer of the respective pattern, since it is never made using the production process of the license holder.

Licensing law does not apply to designs, which is what a knitted/crocheted work or a pattern for crocheting or knitting a figure based on Disney and the like would be. That should be distinguished, since it is not specifically listed in American or German licensing law, which it would have to be in order to be punishable. That is why these even exist at all, and nothing can be done about them, because otherwise there would not be any. That is why these patterns are usually in English, and the German translations are then usually made with the permission of the foreign-language designer of the pattern, since it is their intellectual property. Because the intellectual property of this pattern belongs solely to the designer of the pattern/design, the pattern can therefore be sold or made available for free.... That should be kept separate... Licensed product/right yes, but not applicable to designs; the right to it lies with the designer of the respective pattern, since it is never made according to the production process of the license holder and is therefore never a 1:1 copy and consequently not an original either.... Similarities yes, 1:1 original according to the 1:1 production process of the license holder no. Therefore Walt Disney will never sue anyone with legal grounds....

Dear Jule1977,
Please excuse me, but that’s simply not correct, and statements like that are dangerous.

There have already been cases where pattern authors received cease-and-desist letters, and that’s expensive.

Yes, the intellectual property rights to the pattern may belong to the author, but the licensed products are still protected in various ways, and as long as the product is recognizable, you’re definitely moving into unauthorized territory.

Whether a company like Walt Disney would sue a small crazypatterns author is another question… But it’s definitely not worth the risk, because in a legal dispute, you’ll come out on the losing end.
