I think that “bobble pattern” and “cluster stitches” can coexist as terms.
Whether you call them “bobbles” or “cluster stitches,”
they are groups of stitches worked off together, usually worked into one stitch of the previous round or row.
This type of stitch creates a wonderful textured effect and is very decorative.
You can also use different colors to really make the clusters stand out!
The difference between bobbles and cluster stitches:
With bobbles, several double crochets (usually worked into a single stitch) are worked together; that is, the last loop of each double crochet remains on the hook until the last double crochet of that bobble has been worked, and then all the loops on the hook are worked off together.
Cluster stitch:
With cluster stitches, you work only with loops, which means: yarn over (YO), insert the hook into a stitch and pull the yarn through, yarn over again and insert the hook into the same stitch and pull the yarn through; you can repeat this as many times as you like. The more loops, the thicker the cluster stitch becomes.
I made a baby hat using this technique; it’s very popular with customers, though unfortunately it’s less in demand here on CP—I’m not sure why. I think cluster stitches are very pretty.
Then there are also popcorn stitches
These are crocheted similarly to bobbles, but each double crochet is worked up to the last loop. Usually, there are 5 double crochets in one stitch. Then you insert the hook through the first and last double crochets and work a slip stitch; this pulls the bobble together and makes it look just like popcorn.
I’ve always confused these three stitches—I was never quite sure what the difference actually was. Thank you!
Best regards, Stefanie
P.S. By the way, I think your baby hat is absolutely beautiful. So delicate and cute—if I had a little girl I could give it to, I’d buy the pattern right away :-) It’s truly enchanting!
Dear Stefanie, I’m so glad I was able to help you better understand the difference between these stitches ☺.
And thank you so much for your kind words about my baby hat. Yes, many customers have already been very pleased with it and are happy with the results.
Best regards, Evi
