Dear Community,
Does crafting—interacting with like-minded people, choosing patterns, buying yarn, etc.—make you happy?

Absolutely! Always! Except maybe for those few brief moments when you’re cursing as you unravel your work because you’ve lost count for the umpteenth time.

Yes, crafting definitely makes me happy.

While I’m crafting, it takes my mind off everyday worries; it calms and relaxes me. When I’m done with everything, it makes me happy.

It doesn’t just make you happy—it also helps you get through difficult times, like lengthy medical treatments. During my chemotherapy, I clung to my knitting needles, used them to take my mind off things, and enjoyed seeing my finished projects every now and then.
Woolly regards
Irene

What a question! Of course crafting makes you happy! And all kinds of it,
too. Even if I sometimes feel like biting my sewing machine because something didn’t work out, I just power through it. For example, when I’m sitting at my sewing machine, I’m so “in the flow”—as they say in modern German/Denglish—that I forget to eat and drink and am totally surprised by how much time has passed. Suddenly I’m starving and parched, and it’s dark outside! At least I’ve solved the thirst problem now—I always keep a full carafe next to the machine.
I knit and crochet while watching TV, and before I know it, another episode or movie has started, and oh, I might as well finish that pattern. And suddenly it’s midnight.

Oh yes, crafts definitely make you happy! There are even studies showing that they have a calming effect. I notice this very clearly, and I enhance that feeling of happiness even more by sitting in the garden and crocheting. Of course, it depends on the weather, but when it’s nice outside, I’m out in nature.

Wishing all you enthusiastic craft lovers many happy moments of relaxation 💕🌸🧶
Warm regards, Karoline

I work at a pharmacy and recommend knitting when people need something to help them relax. There’s something meditative about it—it’s a great way to wind down in the evening. In any case, I almost always fall asleep by the fifth row at the latest.😉
That’s why I (almost) never finish anything.

  • It helps me unwind
  • It keeps my mind occupied
  • It makes me happy when it turns out the way I imagined
  • It frustrates me when it doesn’t turn out the way I imagined

BUT, yes!!!! Crafts—whether it’s knitting, crocheting, crafting… or… or… or
—make me happy.

Yes, definitely—crafting makes you happy! A day when I don’t manage to get in at least a few rounds or rows in the evening feels incomplete to me. Most of the time, though, I was just too exhausted from the daily challenges.

It’s no coincidence that my first crochet book published by a real publisher is titled “Crochet Yourself Happy.” 😊 (Although I have to say that the publisher chose the title entirely on their own.)

Last year, I even launched a survey in my social media community for a new book project. The general sentiment was something like: “Does crocheting and crafting calm you down, help you relax?” or rather, “Crafting totally stresses me out—it’s not really a way for me to relax...”
The result: 100% said the former. To be honest, it didn’t surprise me.

Incidentally, there are also useful studies on the impact of crafts like crocheting and knitting on physical and mental well-being.
If you’re interested in reading up on it (feel free to use Google Translate), for example here:

With that in mind: Crochet, knit, and craft your way to happiness! 🥰

For me, there’s something incredibly relaxing about doing crafts because it lets me completely take my mind off my everyday life and focus entirely on the craft itself.

Thanks to crocheting, I was able to overcome my nicotine addiction almost 20 years ago. Reaching for a cigarette was replaced by reaching for a crochet hook.

Although I’d already gone through a phase earlier on where I did filet crochet and made quite a few curtains and blankets. But I really got hooked 20 years ago. Crocheting is like yoga to me. :)

It’s good for the soul to create something with your own hands.
This has nothing to do with the material.
Whether it’s with yarn, crochet hooks, embroidery needles, or knitting needles; with wood; or with a pen or brush on paper—or any number of other things—
it creates moments of happiness and, without a doubt, satisfaction.

In psychosomatic treatment, the creative aspect is an important element alongside conversations, exercise, and so on.

Dear Petra,
I just listened to your song on YouTube—it’s awesome :-).
The bossa nova idea is great, and so is the instrumentation—do you play yourself?
I could only contribute vocals.
Best regards from Carola in Dresden

Just a quick reminder to everyone:
of course crafting makes you happy. For me, hardly a day goes by without me knitting 1...2 or even more rows before going to bed. I can only confirm everything you’ve already written. So with that in mind: grab your needles...
Warm regards from Carola in Dresden

Crafting makes you happy and makes you creative
Creating beautiful things
lifts you out of a slump.

Your self-confidence is strengthened,
it relaxes you anyway
and fills the day with beauty—
crafting brings joy.

Fine motor skills and dexterity,
laziness is overcome
your self-confidence is strengthened—
the joy prevails

Then you can proudly say:
“I made THAT myself!”
When people ask you:
“Where can I find such splendor?”

Crafting makes you happy and makes you creative,
so unpack the yarn and get active now.

A life without crafting—I’ve often seen it—
is possible, but pointless
you’ll understand that right away.

Petra Perle ....2025     :)
