It's great that we also have a “sewing topic” in the forum for once. After all, people here don't just knit and crochet; they also sew diligently.
In my (only) three years of sewing practice, I've sewn quite a few things for the grandchildren—from babies to schoolchildren. So, what should you keep in mind?
Fabric selection
That is very important. You don't need much fabric for the tiny sizes, but it has to be the right kind. It's important to me that the fabric is Oeko-Tex certified, breathable, and easy-care. Parents don't have time for complicated care; everything has to be machine washable and suitable for the dryer.
Colors/patterns
Well, since babies and toddlers can't yet express their tastes, the parents also have to like the patterns and colors. So no more bright pink and light blue like in the past; instead, choose today's more modern, muted colors.
Safety
When you sew things yourself, you have to pay attention to their safety yourself. So don't use strings, cords, or buttons. I always use Kam Snaps for closures; they sit firmly in the fabric.
Fabric motifs
With older children, their wishes for fabric motifs come into play. Just because I think a motif is nice doesn't mean my 7-year-old grandson thinks it's cool. So if I'm planning to sew something for him, we both sit down in front of the screen and choose fabrics together.
I'm looking forward to more tips from other sewists.
Best wishes, Ina
PS. Since text alone is boring, here is a small cross-section of the children's things I've sewn. For now, just girls' things ...
