I had an idea for a crocheted doll that’s just as suitable for newborns as it is for older children. It was important to me that it be small enough for even newborns to wrap their arms around easily, have a neutral-looking mouth, be highly flexible, and not have the oversized head typically found on dolls. My doll is naked, so it can also serve as a dress-up doll. This is meant to encourage older children to make their own doll clothes. But of course, you can also crochet the doll entirely so that it looks as if it’s already dressed (pants + sweater). And for older children, “real” hair can, of course, be tied on, crocheted on, or sewn on.
The legs and arms were crocheted separately, while the torso, neck, and head were made in one piece; the torso is crocheted directly onto the legs with 3 ch in the center and then worked in rounds from there upward. For better flexibility, the arms were crocheted together with single crochets after stuffing and then another row of single crochets was added on top. The arms and legs are stuffed relatively firmly, while the body and head are very soft. For hygienic reasons, I chose a cotton yarn that can be washed at 60° C. The stuffing is boil-proof and hypoallergenic.
I crocheted partly with a size 2.5 hook (arms) and mostly with a size 3 hook. The arms and legs were started with a magic ring and 6 single crochets, doubled to 12 single crochets, and the arms were then continued with 12 single crochets per round. I increased the legs to 18 sc per row and decreased 2 sts at the front in the 6th round (to suggest a foot). The doll turned out to be 18 cm tall. For size comparison, see the 3rd photo with a 50 cm reborn doll.
Have fun making your own!
