🧶 Practical Crochet Ideas for On the Go – What Do You Take Along?

Do you know the feeling?

You’re sitting in a waiting room, taking the train, or waiting for the kids at sports practice—and you think to yourself: “I could actually crochet a few stitches right now…”

These little windows of time are perfect for me to let a project grow piece by piece.

I’m curious:

👉 Which crochet projects do you take with you on the go?
👉 Do you have any tips for storing yarn, a crochet hook and small bits and pieces practically?
👉 And which projects do you think are especially good for on the go?

I personally prefer taking smaller projects with me that work up quickly and are practical at the same time. For example, little pouches or baskets that you can use later in everyday life. That way I have something to do while I’m out—and a practical accessory is created for home at the same time.

Many of them fit perfectly into any handbag. But what I’m much more interested in is:

👉 Which projects have you already crocheted while out and about?
👉 Is there an “on-the-go favorite project” that always comes along with you?

I’m really looking forward to your experiences and tips—I’m sure we can put together a really lovely collection of ideas here that everyone can benefit from!

Best wishes

Good morning, dear Franziska,

Simple patterns and small projects are great for on the go. I like to bring headbands, granny squares, or dishcloths with me. You don’t have to count much, and you can chat while crocheting or knitting.

On long car rides, a scarf works too—you don’t have to wear it or stuff it in your purse; you can just leave it in the car.

Back then, I crocheted this pennant chain on the train and had a nice conversation with an older gentleman whose wife also always does “things like that.”

Granny squares for a blanket are also great for on the go. After you’ve made a few, you’ll know the pattern by heart, so you can quickly finish a few extra ones.

I carry my on-the-go crafts in one of my self-sewn fabric bags. A hook, yarn, scissors, and a darning needle fit perfectly inside.

I think you should make the most of every minute to relax or take your mind off things while doing crafts.

Dear Franziska,
you always structure your topics so well with your questions. Do you do this professionally, or is it a special talent of yours?

Now to your questions: Back when I used to commute to and from work by train every day, I had to make the most of my “free time” and always had an hour-long ride for my crafts. Either a small knitting project with a simple pattern or a little crochet piece. However, early in winter, when it was still dark, the train would always dim the lights to the bare minimum after passengers had boarded. That way, travelers could still take a nap in the warm train. So if I wanted to knit or crochet, I had to choose a seat under the “emergency lighting.”

Fellow passengers would often look at my projects with great curiosity. I explained and showed them what I was doing, and over time, more and more people dared to do their own needlework on the train. Little needlework groups actually started to form.

All I needed for storage was a small closable makeup bag that held everything: yarn, crochet hook, scissors, darning needle ... and my needlework glasses. One reach and I had everything ready.

Now I don’t take the train anymore. Since I can organize my own time, I no longer have to use every minute for knitting or crocheting. I create my own little oases of relaxation in everyday life so I can immerse myself in my crafts.

Warm regards, Ina

Thanks for your lovely replies, Petra and Ina. It’s clear you have plenty of experience with this.

Dear Ina, thanks also for your kind compliment. No, I don’t do this professionally, but I just think it’s nice when people take a little time to put thought into their posts. Then everyone benefits more from them.

Dear Petra, your photos are great... it’s hard to believe that such beautiful things are created while traveling.

Dear Ina, I think it’s totally cool that a real craft group formed on the train. That shows how many people love this hobby but hide it from others. It’s a shame, really...

Since I’ve more or less had to spend the last 3 years in waiting rooms, I always have two things in my bag: my e-reader and a small craft project.

Right now, I’m making little doilies out of lace yarn, which I’ll eventually piece together into a table runner. The yarn, hook, and project take up very little space, and the pattern is easy to pick up.
