Ruffles—yes or no?

Do you like clothes with ruffles, or not so much?

It always depends on the type of clothing, Josefa. Ruffles are fine on dirndl blouses, but I find large ruffles on the button plackets of shirts or blouses too over-the-top—not to mention that they’re always a pain to iron after washing. Lightly ruffled flounces at the hem of a breezy summer dress are also okay, but please only up to size 42—otherwise, it just makes you look bulky.
On kids’ dresses, I think those ruffled little cap sleeves are really cute; they work well there.

I think we all have images of the ruffled fashion from the past in our minds right now. It was a bit over-the-top, that’s true. But today, from a seamstress’s perspective, I think not all ruffles are created equal. A few well-placed ruffles made from the right fabric give a little summer dress for kids that special something.

Personally, ruffles are usually too much for me. In any case, they shouldn’t look puffy or bulky. On the other hand, I like anything that drapes well and flows with the movement.

I knitted a triangular shawl once and added ruffles to the edge.

I can’t imagine myself wearing it on a blouse or dress.
