Mesh shirts over basic shirts

Dear community,
do you like mesh shirts over basic shirts, or not so much?

I always feel like they’ve wrapped a fishing net around themselves; to me, it looks really silly, to put it mildly—like they were trying too hard but didn’t pull it off. Especially since I’m always worried they’ll get snagged on something with it.

I’m not necessarily a fan of mesh shirts, but I’ve crocheted a few oversized sweaters with lots of holes, and I wear a T-shirt underneath those. And you’re right—getting them caught on things is always my biggest worry.

I see mesh shirts more as a passing fad. You really have to think carefully about what to wear under them and whether it’ll look good. The whole look stands or falls with the mesh shirt. And not everyone can pull it off. It’s just not my thing.

There are definitely differences.
Some look really chic.
I like it when the holes aren’t too big.
Some patterns are also very pretty—for example, when they look like they’re woven.
I crocheted a top like this myself. I just wanted to see if I could do it without a pattern. ;-)
It worked out.

It’s all a matter of taste.

When I think of a mesh shirt as a beautifully crocheted or knitted sweater, it looks great with a T-shirt underneath.
I think there are some great patterns for that here on the platform.

I’m planning to make one for myself this summer. I don’t want to wear it over a T-shirt, but rather over a tank top. I want it to be nice and airy but still look like I’m “dressed.” I imagine it would be very comfortable. As I mentioned above, it’s just a matter of taste.
We’ll see if I get around to it this summer....
