Sewing bags / Do you have enough bags?

Have you sewn a bag in 2025, or not yet? Do you have any tips for sewing bags? Or do you prefer crocheting or knitting bags?

You can never have enough bags!

Ever since I’ve been able to sew, I’ve preferred sewn bags. You can choose the fabric yourself, decide on the bag’s size and sturdiness—whether it has a bottom or not, the length and sturdiness of the handles, and so on. And I don’t have to advertise for any supermarket.

This year I’ve already sewn a large shopping tote—a birthday gift for my friend.

Crocheted or even knitted bags don’t have the same sturdiness as a sewn bag, in my opinion. They’re made of stitches, and those stitches stretch out over time. So for me, a crocheted bag would need an extra lining. Way too much hassle. If you know how to sew, you’ve got a clear advantage, and there are so many beautiful fabrics you can use to make a bag.

For Easter, I’d like to sew some small bags for my grandchildren that they can use right away as Easter baskets. But the idea is still just in my head, waiting to be brought to life.

I could almost start a business selling bags, I’ve sewn so many already. Some are still in my possession, and some have already *moved on*

I dug this bag out again; here you can see both sides of it. The hexagons are sewn together by hand, and I braided the handles from strips of fabric. It’s lined, too.

I haven’t sewn or crocheted any yet this year, but I might just end up doing that again.

Dear Veronika, the year is still young! Now that the idea has taken root in your mind, you’ll surely soon have an irresistible urge to make a new bag ;-)

Dear Inge, that bag is really great, too! There are so many fabrics to admire, and the braided handles are worth a second look. Plus, you sewed the hexagons together by hand—that would be too tedious for me. And it also shows that it’s worth saving even the tiniest fabric scraps. They can really come in handy in a project like this.

I’m also currently working on a bag—alongside another project—this time crocheted and very colorful. We’ll see when it gets finished. There just aren’t enough hours in the day!
