Hi everyone, does anyone have experience “adapting” a knitting pattern? I have one, but I’d like to make two changes. Unfortunately, despite hours of searching online, I haven’t been able to find a knitting pattern that matches my exact preferences. Now I have one that’s (almost) exactly what I’m looking for, but I’d like to shift the raglan seam a bit more toward the center (of the neck) and make the neckline significantly narrower (in the original, the neckline is extremely wide all the way to the shoulders). Is it possible to modify the knitting pattern, or is it better to leave it as is? I have to admit that I’m not all that experienced.
Hi Rebecca,
If you purchased the pattern here at Crazypatterns, the first option would be to contact the author directly. Maybe she can give you some tips.
Best regards, Petra
Yes, it’s possible to adapt patterns to your own measurements, ideas, or preferences. To do this, you’ll need:
Spatial awareness to identify and visualize where changes to the pattern are needed
Gauge (at least 15x15 cm) made with the desired yarn in the desired pattern, as the basis for all necessary calculations
Intermediate-level math or proportional calculations to determine the necessary stitches and rows, as well as increases and decreases, based on the gauge.
@Krümelmonster: I’ve created a PDF file with photos of the original sweater taken from all angles. In one of the pictures, I’ve marked my desired changes. Would you be able to create a set of modification instructions for me? I’ll buy the original knitting pattern once all the “logistical details” are sorted out (i.e., who’s going to make it—someone who’s confident they can handle the changes). If you were to do that—how much would it cost?
I assume you’re of average intelligence and can think logically—if so, you can figure this out on your own. You know what you want it to look like, you know your size, and you’ll do a gauge with the yarn you think is suitable. All this information is available to you. With that, you have everything you need to do the necessary calculations.
I already have too little time to take care of my own projects. I don’t know what size you need, how much ease is intended for your dream design (or how much you’d like), or what your gauge might turn out to be. I also don’t know if—or how—a specific pattern should be incorporated into the sweater shape for your size based on your gauge. Without all that information, there’s absolutely nothing I can do for you. You’ll have everything you need as soon as you’ve done a gauge swatch.
And if you’re afraid of doing the math: the calculator on your cell phone will help (I’m assuming you have one).
@Rebecca12,
welcome to the forum. Please talk to the author/provider of the pattern before asking other authors/providers to change the pattern. It is always better to get the original author's consent for this.
@Kruemel-Monster,
please reply to my private message.
