Sewing a coat dress

what is a coat dress? Is it difficult to sew?

Sewing a coat dress shouldn’t be any harder or more time-consuming than sewing a coat or a dress. What you need is a fabric suitable for a coat dress—that is, it shouldn’t be too flowy or too lightweight. What’s very important is a good sewing pattern and the right size so that it fits well. I’ve never sewn one myself, but I have sewn coats and dresses before.

So a coat dress is a dress that you can button up, like a coat? How is it different from a wrap dress?

A wrap dress is folded over at the front all the way to the other hip; it’s then fastened with a tie belt—essentially wrapped around the body. A coat dress is buttoned at the front but very often features a waist belt with a matching clasp or a decorative clasp. Coat dresses come with a single row of buttons or a double row of buttons, depending on personal taste and current fashion trends. The Princess of Wales often wears gorgeous and chic coat dresses.
