Crafting without patterns / freehand?

Dear Community,
Do you sometimes work without patterns—freehand, so to speak—or not really?

I really enjoy doing it that way—just winging it and seeing what turns out :-), but often I have a pretty specific idea of what I want to make and then try to see if it’s actually doable. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t—that’s life :-)))

Oh yes, I actually enjoy doing that sometimes. For example, sometimes I have some yarn lying around, and all of a sudden it occurs to me that I could use a scarf—in that case, I don’t need any specific patterns; I just figure out what width and length the yarn will probably be enough for, and off I go.
And with so-called licensed products, it’s not always easy to get your hands on patterns. So I’ve actually figured out how to make a pillow shaped like a certain car on my own, and I’ve also made a Cheshire Cat before.

I’m currently knitting a sleeveless jacket freehand.
But now I’m having a hard time decreasing because I can’t try it on myself.
It’s easier for me when I’m knitting for kids.

I prefer to crochet using a pattern. But for little things like kids’ bags or straight pieces, I just start crocheting. There are plenty of patterns to choose from online.

For figures and dolls, I work better with a pattern.

For mosaic granny squares, I also like to crochet from pictures sometimes—I don’t need a pattern for those. I already know how to do it. You can find plenty of inspiration there.
