Finishing seams

How do you finish seams when sewing?

There are various methods for finishing a seam. The simplest is to use an overlock or coverlock machine; the machine trims off any excess seam allowance and sews the pieces together at the same time. With a coverlock machine, you can even add a security stitch, resulting in a clean and secure seam.
But there’s also the hidden seam: first, you sew the fabric pieces together right sides together as usual, then you fold the whole thing over and sew another seam so that the original seam is hidden by the folded edge. I like to use this type of seam when I’m sewing shopping bags or gym bags.

I only have a basic sewing machine. I just neaten the seams with a tighter zigzag stitch.
With some fabrics, though, you can skip the neatening because they don’t fray. Those are my favorites😉

When you’re sewing a jacket or coat with a lining, you don’t need to neaten the seams because they’re completely covered by the lining. But for a dress or skirt with a lining, I’d neaten all the seams—it always looks better when you lift the lining and the neat seams are visible.
