Pinking shears for fabric—do they have to be that heavy?

Mine cuts well, but it’s so heavy. Are there any lightweight pinking shears?

Hi Anja, I don’t know the answer. But I have a heavy pair like that, too. It’s probably so heavy and sturdy that it cuts through even thick fabric easily.

The lightweight pinking shears aren’t worth a thing—I had a lightweight pair that went dull in no time, and you can’t even sharpen them because they’re made of inferior, cheap steel. Mine is heavy too, but they’re good brand-name shears that still cut well even after years of use.

My pinking shears are also an heirloom and really heavy.

@Inge—can you sharpen pinking shears? Mine gets stuck, and I can only cut very short pieces at a time. Do you think they’ll work 100% again after sharpening?

And then I saw that there are also shears that cut wavy lines. Does anyone here have experience with those?

Yes, you can have pinking shears sharpened, BUT you need a professional to do it, because if the steel is low-quality, the whole effort isn’t worth it—it’s cheaper to just buy a new pair.

I have a pair of pinking shears, too. They’re pretty heavy as well. But I’ve had them for many years.
If I have to, I can even use them as a sewing weight. 😄

I’m looking for a high-quality pair of pinking shears—can anyone recommend one? I only have a pair meant for “hobby” use, and they don’t cut fabric properly, plus they’re really stiff to use (they were cheap). Just cheap cast stuff.

With heavy scissors, I try to keep them on the table whenever possible. That way, I don’t have to lift the heavy scissors.
Mine isn’t that heavy, but it’s from a specialist shop.
