Yes and no, Josefa. I started machine embroidery with the Brother 750E. This machine guides you through every step, and it also comes with several pre-installed embroidery files. However, at some point the hoop became too small for me—even though this machine has four hoop sizes: 20x60mm, 100x100mm, 130x180mm, and 180x300mm, that just wasn’t enough for me anymore :-) My current embroidery machine is the Brother Innovis V3—a spaceship, as I always say.
That said, I can only speak from experience with Brother machines—I’m not familiar with others—though there may be some that are also very well-suited for beginners. The important thing is not to start with something too big, because you might easily feel overwhelmed by all the technology that comes at you at once.
Another important factor for me was having software that lets you design and digitize your own embroidery patterns, because that’s when it really becomes fun—when you can embroider patterns you’ve created yourself.
Unfortunately, these programs aren’t exactly cheap, but the investment is worth it if you’re serious about it. I personally work with Embird
Do you buy software for that or take out a subscription?
Is it okay for a beginner to buy an older machine? One that’s been on the market for 10 years or so?
I’ve seen some on classified ads for 200; I’d still be willing to spend that much.
Basically, I just want to embroider names and little flowers (for now).
Do you need special thread?
And do you have to use those embroidery stabilizers?
I’d rather buy one than get a subscription. I’ve had my Embird since 2007 and I’m still using it. Sure, every now and then I buy the latest version that’s available, but I don’t feel pressured to buy something new every year, even if I don’t need it—that’s how I handle it, but everyone has to decide for themselves.
Yes, you need special machine embroidery thread, and for a used one I wouldn’t buy privately, but would look for a dealer who offers used and refurbished embroidery machines. That way you have a warranty if anything should happen, which you don’t get with a private purchase.
Yeah, I just saw one—supposedly a Christmas gift. Seems a little odd to me.
But the price range is huge—from 600 from a private seller to 1500 from a retailer.
I’m not spending that much.
I bought the Brother Innovis 750E used on *eBay many years ago because I really wanted it and didn’t have enough money for a new one.
But I was really nervous that I might have fallen into the clutches of a scammer...
I didn’t. It even came with quite a few accessories: embroidery stabilizer, embroidery thread, bobbin thread ...👌🏻
The machine still embroiders beautifully today. I’ve bought a few embroidery files here and there.
You can enter text directly on the machine.
That said, the machine is a bit of a diva. If there’s even a speck of dust in the bobbin case, it refuses to work.
But that’s easy to fix. 😂
Well, if it’s not a scam, that would be an amazing price. But if it is a scam, that’s a lot of money down the drain.
Or the machine might not even work. Waaaahhh—or just pay 300 more at the dealer...
hmpf
