Elf Doors as a New Idea for Advent Decorations

Dear users, dear authors,
Have you heard about this trendy idea with elf doors? If I understand it correctly, there’s a small decorative elf door that the Christmas elf can magically pass through during Advent , and then he brings along decorations , candy, or little surprises. Maybe he’ll play a few pranks. The whole thing is then set up as part of the preparations for Santa Claus and as a complement to the Advent calendar .

Yes, dear Josefa, I’ve already come across several versions of the elf doors this year. It’s just a little door… the rest is up to your imagination. The door alone doesn’t make much of an impression as a decoration. You need a matching design all around it.

You also need space to showcase the elf door and display it. The decor industry always has to come up with something new, even though we all have enough already, right? That’s why I’m just observing this trend and letting it pass me by.

I still have a door like that and matching decorations in stock—it was a thing 2 or 3 years ago. I think the idea is really cute, but as Ina already wrote, everything has to fit together, and that starts with the spot you choose. So I’ve still got it in the back of my mind, and if a flash of inspiration strikes, I could get started right away.

A little elf door like that is definitely super exciting for young children. But it also involves a lot of work. That can definitely turn into a lot of stress during the run-up to Christmas! My grandchildren are already too old for that, but I’m sure I would have liked it back in the day.

For many years now, our grandson has been visited by a Christmas elf at the start of the Advent season. To let this elf into the apartment, he has his own little front door in the hallway. That’s all the decoration his elf has. During the Christmas season, the little elf always sits in a different spot and watches what our grandson is up to and whether he’s been good. Today, of course, he knows that Mom, Dad, and Grandma are the ones who put the elf in the apartment, but when he was little, it seemed like magic to him. And after the Christmas season, he disappears again through that little door in the New Year. He never says exactly when he’s leaving, but he always leaves a little goodbye note for him.

I find this tradition, which my daughter started for her son, beautiful all over again every year.

I’ve never heard of this before, but it sounds enchanting and has a magical quality for the kids. Very nice. :)

When my daughter was little, I wrote her a story every year about Flix the Christmas elf. I could have really used a door like that back then.

It’s not exactly new, but it’s super trendy this year in particular.
At our house, an elf has been “living” in the corner next to the patio door for years… I made the door, the little window, and so on myself out of wooden sticks.
For the past three years, there’s been an elf at my kids’ daycare and in their elementary school classes during the Christmas season.

I think it’s cute.
In Scandinavia—especially in Sweden, I think—elves have been a common tradition for ages.

I’ve decorated my (now) elf family on a shelf above the sofa. I crocheted the elves myself. I have a wooden disc as their little room, with the door behind it. I added some tiny furniture from Tedi and collected everything that’s just small. My kids have long since grown up, but this always brings me so much joy. And every year, something new gets added.
