Carnival Begins November 11, 2024

Carnival is starting. Are you in?

It just passes us by—we don’t care about it at all. We take note of it, sure, since it’s served up to us in the news and such, but that’s about it.

Anyone who grew up in areas where Carnival is celebrated every year will surely enjoy it. It’s part of their tradition—maybe some are even members of a carnival club, dressing up and swaying their way through the festive season. Then there are the endless carnival speeches on TV again… oh no, that’s just not my thing. But to everyone who enjoys it, I wish you a joyful time.

Even though my husband was born right in the heart of Cologne, he’s not really into it either—and I certainly am not. I used to enjoy it as a kid—dressing up is fun—but these days, especially in Cologne, it’s not all fun and games anymore.
We used to always get far enough away in time, but now that we can’t travel anymore, we just stay home. We now live on the very outskirts of the city, where it’s much quieter anyway; we used to live just a few meters from the parade route—that’s really only for die-hard fans.
But—as the Carnival enthusiasts here so confidently say—“God must be from Cologne”—and they’re right: instead of the forecast of continuous rain, it was actually quite sunny today.
