How difficult is it to try a new crochet technique?

Hi everyone,
I’m sitting here trying to crochet the “yarn-under” technique. It’s actually pretty simple, BUT when you’ve been crocheting simple single crochet stitches for over 60 years, like I have, it’s a total struggle.
My fingers just crochet on their own (it’s a bit like riding a bike), and now I’m supposed to do it the OTHER way around.
I’m curious to see if my brain can handle this change.
Have you had similar experiences?

Have a good night, and warm regards
from Petra, who’ll keep crocheting until my brain gets used to the idea that things can be done differently sometimes.

Are you sure this should go in the authors’ forum?
Can I move it to the public section of the forum?

I just watched the technique on YouTube. It’s not hard, normally, but as you mentioned, it’s just a little different. I think my brain would go on strike too.
But it’s supposed to be a good thing to challenge your brain a bit.

In any case, I hope you have fun and succeed.

Have a lovely evening.
Love, Petra

@Josefa, yes, I’m sure this applies to a lot of people—not just the authors.
That’s why I’d ask you to move this post to the public forum.

I used to crochet “normally” too. For several years now, I’ve been crocheting exclusively with the yarn-under technique. At first, you mix the two—that’s completely normal. It takes a while before you use only one technique. In fact, I now find it just as difficult to crochet “normally.” But the Yarn Under technique results in a “cleaner, neater” look thanks to the “X” stitches, and the figures gain better stability because the crocheted piece automatically becomes sturdier. I actually started using it because you can’t see the stuffing with black yarn, and it’s also more practical for embroidering faces.

So, as they say, practice makes perfect 😉

I just tried this technique for the first time.
Switching between “normal” and “yarn under” wasn’t hard for me.

I’ve moved it.
Have fun continuing.

I’ve since mastered the technique myself, but it wasn’t hard for me at all. Now I just have to be careful when I want to crochet “normally” for other projects. I’ve realized (I hadn’t noticed this before) that I’ve probably always been unconsciously crocheting double crochets and half double crochets with the yarn under.

Learned something new again. I just watched a video and can imagine that I’ll have trouble changing my way of thinking too. But I’ll definitely give it a try over the long weekend

Happy Halloween

Well, look at that. Learned something new again. I’ll have to try it out—otherwise, I always crochet “normally” too.
You’ll definitely have to concentrate at first, but the more you crochet this way, the more I think it’ll become second nature.
Thanks for the tip.
