Sewing a Grain Pillow

Hey, quick question: is there a trick to sewing these together without the grains spilling out?

I’d sew the fabric pieces together with the right sides together all the way around, leaving a 3–4 cm opening on one short side (since most pillows are rectangular).
Then press the seams, turn the pillow right side out, press it smooth again, fill it (using a funnel if needed), and then sew the opening closed; whether you do this by hand or with a machine depends on how much filling you’re using.

Yes, I’d also wait as long as possible before adding the grains.

Exactly—first sew the cover, leave a small turning opening, fill it, and sew it closed.

I’m sure you’ve already finished your grain pillow. If not, you could take another look at my blog post “Sewing Pattern Weights” . Here I sewed pattern weights and filled them with bird sand. That’s actually even finer than grains.

Scroll down to just before the end and take a look at the pictures. You need to place the project in a container so that the opening can’t tip over. Then fill the small turning opening using a funnel (you can roll a piece of paper into a cone). Then sew it closed by hand using a ladder stitch.

I’ve sewn several pattern weights myself — all filled with bird sand — and they’re all leak-proof.
