Quick question....
I’m cleaning up—my yarn cabinet has to go out of my room, so I’m downsizing my stash.
Several years ago, I treated myself to a subscription—every two months, I’d get a pattern with matching yarn.... But for some reason, I never actually knitted anything from them.... Luckily, the patterns and yarn are all packed together in separate envelopes....
Can I sell them as a set, or are the patterns protected by copyright?
It would be great if someone had an answer...
Thanks for your answers....
Then I can keep tidying up 😄
Somehow, there really won’t be much yarn left. My hand-dyed sock yarn and the virgin wool...
Then I’ll move the cabinet out, set up a shelf, and push the table against the wall (I can fold it out if needed—it’s one of those from IKEA); that’ll be enough space to work on it...
You’re allowed to sell this printed booklet. You just can’t copy it and then pass it on. By making a copy, you’re reproducing a pattern, and that violates copyright law. The same applies to digital files. If you forward a digital file, this automatically constitutes a copy or reproduction and is therefore a copyright infringement. However, if—as in your case here—you have a pattern only in printed form (booklet or book) and pass it on without making a copy of it yourself, this is not a problem.
Then I’ll be on the safe side 😃
I always think about this, simply because I really respect the work that goes into the designs and, above all, into the patterns...
I’m the type who buys a pattern rather than just picking up on an idea and getting started. A lot of people in the “Knitting Group” can’t understand that... But I don’t care 😁
Hi Josefa....
I didn’t mean this as legal advice. I just wanted to know what others think and how they see it...
I’d rather sell the yarn without the patterns than go to a lawyer.... That would be way too much hassle.
It’s just that the yarn was wound into a single skein in the exact amount needed for the shawl. None of these are “commercial” 50g skeins. One of them contains two colors—one 40g and one 70g.... So without the pattern or any reference to it, you wouldn’t be able to do anything with the yarn.... and that would be such a shame because they’re all such “luxury yarns”....
