Color changes within a row

Hi,

how do you handle it when, for example, you knit 20 stitches in one color, 20 stitches in another, and then switch back to the first color?
Do you carry the yarns along, or do you cut them?

Since I rarely work with color changes like this, I have a hard time remembering how to do it.

I wouldn’t let the yarn run along; instead, I’d cross the yarns when changing colors so that no unsightly holes form.
