I love sock yarn for almost any type of clothing, including children’s clothes. It has a high wool content, is quite durable, and washes well—which is a big plus for kids’ clothes.
I also love the beautiful color gradients, which look completely different on clothing than they do on socks. Knitting with hand-dyed sock yarn is a particularly special experience because you never know what the final result will look like until it’s finished.
It’s also wound quite tightly, so it’s nice and smooth, and it’s a joy to work with. Plus, it’s nice and cozy—I’ve already knitted some lovely blankets out of sock yarn.
Take a moment to think about what sock yarn used to look like. It was black, charcoal, gray, brown, or dark blue—mostly dark, muted, classic colors for (men’s) socks. It’s only in recent years that sock yarn has become more colorful and vibrant—and thus much more interesting for crafts other than socks. It’s even available in neon colors, Christmas colors, with glitter, and with color gradients. There’s been quite a bit of evolution—moving away from dark sock yarn toward a true all-rounder. No wonder it’s used for so much more than just socks these days.
My yarn stash consists mainly of “sock yarn.”
I like the yardage, and as Ina already mentioned, sock yarn is now available in soooo many colors and blends.
And even though I have a lot of sock yarn lying around here, I’ve only knitted two pairs of socks in my entire life. I mostly have shawls/scarves on my needles.
Today I’m going to try out whether I can use it for tablet weaving too and see how the band “behaves”... Since I have so many “scraps” (20g and up; anything smaller had to go), this seems like a good opportunity. But first I need to modify the loom this morning...
