Crosscraft: Liking Several Types of Crafts

Dear users, dear authors,
if I understood this correctly, the term Crosscraft refers to the love of several types of crafts that you practice regularly, instead of focusing on just one type of craft?

I haven’t heard the term before (it sounds more like a sport), but yes, I love several types of handicrafts. Right now, my focus is entirely on sewing and knitting.

I’m always doing several myself. Over the past year, it’s been knitting and crocheting. Since the start of the year, I’ve been doing more embroidery—cross-stitch. And now I’m trying out new things on the sewing machine. There’s a lot to discover there, too.

I like to try new things. Felting, for example. But that didn’t really win me over. Wet felting involved too much water for my taste, and with needle felting I somehow lack the imagination. But I gave it a try.

“Crosscraft” seems to be a new term for crafts that involves spreading your interests in many different directions.

Wasn’t that always called DIY? Anyway, yes, I like to switch things up sometimes, but I haven’t been doing it as often lately. Although I really need to fire up the sewing machine again—maybe that’ll get me back into it.
I’ve also tried needle felting; there are some really great things you can make with it, but it just takes too long for my taste.

Well, I also have what I call “multiple craft projects” going on: sewing, machine embroidery, and knitting. When it comes to sewing alone, there are already very significant differences—sewing clothes, sewing lingerie (which I also did for a while), then decorative sewing (pillows, etc.), children’s toys like teddy bears and stuffed animals, and then patchwork. And within patchwork, there are also very different types.

Best regards, Inge

Why do we always have to come up with an English term for everything?
I’ll just keep my interests broad!

When I read the term “Crosscraft,” I thought it meant combining several types of handicrafts in a single project.
And I think that would be really interesting!

It’s actually a shame that’s not what it means—I would have liked to learn more about it...

Best regards, Karoline

Karoline, this is done more often than you might think—you sew or knit something and then embroider a motif onto it, and just like that, you’ve combined two different types of handicrafts into a single piece.

Best regards, Inge

Yes, I was thinking of embroidery, too. But knitting and crocheting would be an adventure.
Maybe I’ll give it a try sometime... 😅😘

That works too, Karoline. Take a look here:

The blanket is knitted and the border is crocheted, so it fits the description :-)

Best regards, Inge

Something I’ve always wanted to try is combining Tunisian crochet with knitting. The two crafts are actually quite similar in some ways. But I haven’t gotten around to it yet.

I’ve often done crocheting and knitting together. They go well together.

Right now, I’m embroidering and then sewing something from it. That goes well together, too.

I really like that, Petra, especially the border… I’ve combined those techniques often in my Hardanger work, too…
Oh, so that makes me a Crosscrafter ... I agree with Ina—I hate this “Denglish,” even though I’ve started using a few of these terms myself.
Back when I couldn’t knit socks yet but could crochet, I’d knit the leg because the crocheted version was too tight for me...

I also like to combine crocheting, knitting, and sewing...
