Singeing is a finishing method used on both yarns and fabrics. They are “singeed” using various methods—that is, flamed or singed—to remove protruding fiber ends. This results in a smoother surface, a clearer stitch pattern, and also reduces the tendency to pill. It’s often done with cotton yarns, such as machine sewing threads, so that the yarn glides more easily through the thread guide system and the needle eye of the sewing machine. However, you can sometimes also see this term on the labels of cotton knitting yarns and embroidery threads.
