Material list in the product description

I’m pretty new here, and I’ve noticed that the patterns I’ve looked at don’t mention the materials or required supplies.
Surely that belongs in a product description.
I don’t find that particularly helpful. For the heart baskets, I wrote in the review that I think it’s important to mention the wire. It’s not something you just happen to have lying around.
That’s just one example.
In other crochet or knitting patterns, I’m missing the yarn yardage, yarn material, and/or gauge information.
If I buy blind and want to get started right away, I’m brought to an abrupt halt because I don’t have anything suitable.
This is simply information you need beforehand in order to buy the right pattern.
Just a suggestion.

Best regards,
Iris

Hi Iris,
Welcome to our forum and portal.
Thanks for your feedback. This is a topic that comes up again and again here in the forum, and we place a lot of importance on it.

If you’d like, you can reach out to the authors via PM or through the comments section and point out that they should add the material list and all the relevant details.
Alternatively, I can do that.
To do so, please send me the names of the authors in question via PM (private message), and I’ll contact them via PM.
Which would you prefer?

Hi Iris,
I also think it’s very important to include material details in the product description; I always include them in the description text for my patterns. For materials that aren’t available everywhere, I also provide links to where they can be purchased.
Of course, I’ve included the gauge in the patterns. I didn’t include it in the description text—I didn’t think it was necessary there yet. But thanks for the suggestion!
It would be interesting to know if this is a common request?
Best,
Karin

Hello Iris,

You’re speaking from my heart :-), I also miss the material information in the item description for many models. I’ve often contacted designers before buying to ask about the material used, and I’ve always received a reply. But it would be really nice if this information could be found right away in the item description, since the first question I have when I look at a model is: - What yarn and what needle size were used. -
I don’t find gauge information quite so important, since the differences can be easily balanced out here by using a different needle size.

Maybe more buyers who have this wish will come forward too; that would be nice :-)

Best,
Jana

I also think it’s important for getting an initial overview. That’s why I include it in my patterns.

I think what Iris meant here is to include this additional information right here on CP in the product description, so that customers can see what they need for the pattern BEFORE they buy it.

I feel the same way myself: Especially when I buy a new pattern “for the weekend,” I need to know beforehand whether I have all the materials at home and can get started right away, or whether I need to plan another “trip” to the yarn or craft store.

This is at least as important as specifying what skills are required for the pattern—that is, which stitches and techniques you need to know—so you can see if the project is too challenging for you.

Thank you all very much for your feedback.
AramisvonK hit the nail on the head. Maybe I expressed myself a bit awkwardly.
If I know before buying that I need materials like decorative wire (again, the heart basket from above), then I don't buy the pattern because I don't have any wire, and it would actually be a waste of money for me. It was supposed to be a quick gift. Now I have the pattern, and since I live in the countryside where there are no craft stores, the only option is ordering online, but that has to be worthwhile because of the shipping costs.
On the other hand, I finished the Rustico basket because I was able to check for the steel-free clothesline before buying. It was in the description. Perfect.

I think I'll handle it myself if needed. Maybe this should simply be pinned somewhere as a suggestion for the sellers (who surely have their own area here). In case they don't read this here.
But thank you for the offer.
And thanks to everyone who already includes this material list in the description anyway.
Best regards
Iris

Hi,

I also think information about the materials, yardage, and composition is very important.
It shouldn’t be too much trouble to include these details. Even just the yardage and, if possible, the needle or hook size are very helpful.

Wishing everyone happy crafting with their projects.
Best regards, Handi
