Dear users, dear authors,
Would you like to share something about knitting mistakes / tinking back / unraveling and undoing twisted knitting stitches? Have fun knitting.
Who actually likes doing that, Josefa????? I only knit back if I notice the mistake in the same row; otherwise, I prefer to unravel it—it’s less stressful and easier for me to handle.
But I have a friend who—let’s just say—unraveling is her second hobby, given how often she’s at it :-))))
But with lace patterns, you’re out of luck with unraveling, Inge! At least that’s how it is for me. I’d rather knit back—it doesn’t take any longer than sorting out the yarn overs when picking up the stitches again.
When I have to rip out a larger section, I rip it out in such a way that I leave the last row to be ripped out intact. Then I pull the yarn very carefully and pick up the individual stitches again.
For lace patterns, I rip out in this way so that I pick up the stitches on a wrong side row. I find this easier than doing it on rows with yarn overs.
For lace patterns, especially complicated ones, a lifeline is very helpful. When knitting shawls, I often insert one at the end of a repeat. So far, I haven’t needed it very often, but when I have, I’ve been very glad I had it.
I had to rip out my last shawl again—after a little over 100 rows, I realized I should have read the knitting chart more carefully. Half of the stitches I’d knitted together were “the wrong way around” 🥴
If there’s a mistake in a lace shawl—say, up to five stitches—depending on the pattern, I might just take those specific stitches off the needle. Place the work on a knitting mat and pin it lightly in place, then carefully remove the wrong stitches from the needle and knit them up again. But it takes a lot of concentration....
With my shawl, there were too many stitches, so I just started over.
