Zigzagging the armholes of a knitted sweater with a sewing machine

I’m having a little problem: I’m knitting a sweater in a leopard pattern.
To avoid having to knit the wrong side row, I’m knitting the sweater in the round...
Could I possibly cut out the armholes afterward with the sewing machine using a zigzag stitch?
So, sew around the armhole with a zigzag stitch, then cut it open...
Has anyone ever worked the armhole this way?
I’d appreciate a reply.
Warm regards from me

But the stitches will run away from you at a gallop if you try to do it that way. That’s because the stitches on a knitted garment are always larger than the sewing machine can handle, and on top of that, this seam will be stiff compared to the others. I wouldn’t do it that way, unless you have a coverstitch machine with a safety stitch—but even then, I’d think twice about it. Knits and sewing machines only work well together if you’ve mastered both with the right thread and a lot of practice, because if it’s not done right, you’ll end up with ripples along the seam, and that looks anything but nice.

Best regards, Inge

All right, then I won’t do it with the sewing machine.
Thanks for your honest opinion.

Ask Aunt Google about “steeking.”
There are definitely YouTube videos or “how-to” guides that explain it in detail.
It’s often done in patterns with Fair Isle designs. Extra stitches are knitted, which are then cut open in the middle.
I’ve never done it myself because I don’t feel confident enough to try it. 😉😒
Hopefully this helps you.
I’m curious to see how your sweater turns out.

Of course you can knit a sweater entirely in the round, but that does require a bit of “preparation.”
Steeking is a very good idea.... Before you can cut anything open, you’ll need to pick up additional stitches first—usually 5 stitches, known as the “steek.” These stitches must be secured before cutting.... It’s best to look it up online....
