Use up your sock yarn / sock yarn scraps now

Dear users, dear authors,
If you have sock yarn / leftover sock yarn / leftover yarn / yarn scraps , you can put them to great use with the patterns in this thread. Have fun with it.

Sock yarn is wonderful for knitting children’s clothing, such as these leggings. They fit children ages 3 and up. My granddaughter was still wearing them at age 5—now her younger sister is enjoying them.

The leggings are easy to knit, in one piece with no seams. Both kids and parents love them, because when playing outside, the little ones are always perfectly warm and have full freedom of movement. Since sock yarn washes well, it checks all the boxes.

To the knitting pattern

I have spiral socks for you.

Spiral socks are knitted without a heel and fit a range of sizes because they grow with the wearer. This makes them ideal as house socks for guests or for our kids.

For the small socks, a few grams of leftover yarn is enough; for the largest pair in shoe size 46/47, you’ll need 150 grams. 

Since sock yarn is usually quite thin, leftover sock yarn is wonderful for making clothes for little dolls.



This knitted turtleneck sweater fits female and male fashion dolls about 30 cm tall. You knit in stockinette stitch; the pattern is in the skein and emerges on its own. The sweater is knitted as a top-down raglan and can therefore be very easily adjusted to fit slightly larger or smaller dolls. There is also a matching hat.

And here is a crocheted sweater made from sock yarn. Here, too, you can clearly see how the pattern develops on its own. This sweater is crocheted using single crochet. It has a very simple shape and, like the knitted sweater, can be adjusted in size. In the crochet pattern, you will also find the pattern for a pair of long pants.

Even for me, sock yarn doesn’t necessarily just turn into socks. Sock yarn is so lovely and fine—and is now available in many bold colors—that I love to use it to knit or crochet doll clothes. Here are a few examples. I hope you enjoy making these yourself.

Poncho in various styles with hat

This is a great way to use up leftover yarn. I like to use gradient yarns. The poncho is easy to crochet—even beginners can manage it. All doll moms will be delighted to add to their dolls’ wardrobes.



Doll Cardigans

The length of the cardigans is adjustable. We knit them as raglan from the top in one piece. That means there are no annoying seams. I’ve knitted them using both solid-colored and multicolored sock yarn. You can also combine the two. Another great way to use up leftover yarn.



Elegant Evening Gown for Dolls

We knit this using a set of double-pointed needles. All you need are small amounts of leftover yarn in pretty colors. It’s so easy to knit that you’ll definitely want to make more than just one gown. You can knit it in a short or long version.
