Hi,
has anyone knitted a shawl (in a narrow shape) sideways/on the bias before?
I mean NOT a Baktus shawl (it ends up too narrow for me, or if I make it deeper it’s too long 😞 )
More like a boomerang, but with points of almost equal length. Is there perhaps a trick to it (maybe in the spacing of the increases) 🤔
With shawls that only have increases on one side, you get one extremely long side and one very short side; I find shawls like that difficult to wear.
In terms of shape, a boomerang is the nicest to wear, if only it didn’t have that one long point 😉
Thanks in advance
I haven’t knitted a shawl like that yet. But I’d like to try it sometime. How do you go about it—do you look for a suitable pattern, or do you create something completely original?
I’d say you could calculate the right proportions with a gauge swatch; then you’ll know how many stitches and increases you need.
Or try searching online for “banana shape”....
In that case, you pick up stitches along the entire length and then knit with shortened rows to create the curve, so to speak....
However, it does require a bit more concentration with a slip-stitch pattern...

I meant a shawl started from the side; your photo shows one started “in the middle.”
@Steffi
Banana shape, I’ll have to look that up
I’ve tried something crescent-shaped before, but since those are also knitted from the middle, I don’t really like the color gradient as much.
I really want to start from the side so the gradient runs diagonally 🙃
For my Boomerang, I’ve always increased by doubling in every row so far (the first or the last stitch), knitting 2 together on the wrong side row, but then I get that long point 😔
I thought someone might have tried this before, so the shawl would end up with sides of almost equal length and I could save myself the testing 😇
Now I somehow have to figure out how to distribute the increases and decreases so it becomes isosceles 🤔
Hi,
I took another closer look at the shawl—with the solid color, I hadn’t even noticed the shortened rows 🙃
It’s hard for me to imagine what it’ll look like with a color gradient 🤔
Do you knit one wing/side to the middle first and then the other, or how does it work? 🤔🤔🤔
