Question about the pattern

I’m still pretty new to this and I think I’ve picked out a pattern that’s a bit confusing for me.
You start with a back piece with a shoulder slope, worked using short rows. Regarding the number of rows, it only says that after the first two rows, you should knit two more stitches on each side, turn the work 7 times in total until the first color change, then knit two rows in the other color, and then switch back. At the end, there should be 5 stitches left on each side; you should knit one extra stitch before turning, and then switch back to the pattern color. Actually, the base color is supposed to be kept for 20 rows. After 20 rows, however, I still have significantly more than 5 stitches left on each side.
This might be a bit confusing, but maybe someone has an idea where I might be going wrong or if there’s a special way to count when working shortened rows.

Oh, and in case it helps, at the beginning there were 41 unworked stitches on each side, and in the first two rows you knit up to the fourth stitch each time ☺️
