There aren’t any left around here. When we still lived downtown, the Kaufhof store back then had a well-stocked haberdashery section, but that was phased out when it became Galeria-Kaufhof.
When we moved here, there was also a haberdashery store in the nearby Rheincenter, but it’s been gone for quite a few years now—long before the pandemic.
I know we’re supposed to shop locally whenever possible, but without the internet, I wouldn’t even be able to get a spool of sewing thread.
I have no idea if there are still stores in the city center; I hardly ever go into Cologne anymore.
Our last well-stocked haberdashery closed down many years ago. But I can still get my sewing thread locally at a good price, because we still have two fabric stores here that sell thread and needles, and T.d.x. also has an ever-growing selection of haberdashery items—not to mention their great fabrics.
We have a craft store in the neighboring town that’s well-stocked with everything I need.
They carry both yarn and fabric. They also sell sewing machines and other items, and the owner’s husband runs a repair shop right here in town—including bike repairs.
If I’m interested in something and they don’t have it in stock, they’ll try to get it for me through their supplier. Most of the time, that works out great—if I can’t get it there, I don’t really need it anyway, so I just move on to the next idea.
I’m a die-hard in-store shopper and try not to buy anything online.
There’s a yarn shop nearby that has a pretty good selection of sewing supplies, and a few stores down the street there’s a fabric store that’s also well-stocked. They also offer sewing classes and are happy to help if you have any questions about your “own” sewing machine 😁 (my machine and I just aren’t compatible)
It really seems like there aren’t any dedicated haberdashery shops left anymore
Most yarn shops or craft shops have a small haberdashery section. Around here, even the local supermarket and the drugstore carry a small selection of haberdashery items. When I need something specific, I have to order it online.
But I don’t really mind that, because I don’t need much advice when it comes to haberdashery. A zipper is a zipper, and buttons are buttons. I can handle picking them out on my own.
There aren’t any haberdashery stores here anymore either. Just like at Ruth’s, there’s a small selection here at the supermarket or drugstore. I try to get more specialized items in Stade, but most of the time I end up having to order them online, unfortunately.
