Dear users and authors,
what has been your experience with eyelash yarn?

We have a slightly older thread on the topic of eyelash yarn , but it’s kind of gotten lost among the other threads, so I’ve started a new one.
It would be great if a few authors, professionals, or users with a lot of experience could chime in so that newcomers can also learn about eyelash yarn. Thank you all.

Last winter, I made my Advent wreath out of eyelash yarn. Many years ago, I also knitted a teddy bear from it.

In general, I’d say that eyelash yarn is better suited for knitting than for crocheting. That said, stitch patterns aren’t really possible when knitting with it, since they don’t stand out at all.
However, it’s very well suited for creating effects in items like scarves or shawls. I wouldn’t necessarily use it to make a garment, since the yarn is almost always made of acrylic.
But it’s perfect for home accessories like pillows. Because of its volume,
you make progress very quickly, which gives you a sense of accomplishment right away.

Hi,

you can’t really crochet with it.
You might be able to crochet and/or knot doll wigs out of it.

Personally, I only use Addi-Express—if at all—to make simple but super-soft tube scarves out of fringe yarn.

Best regards, Nina

I knitted my daughter a jacket out of white eyelash yarn. However, I carried along a white support thread.
The jacket turned out really beautiful and is incredibly popular with my little princess, but otherwise I wouldn’t really use it for clothing.

I had once considered buying fringe yarn and then crocheting with it.

Thank you for letting me know that fringe yarn isn’t suitable for crocheting or for beginners. You’ve saved me from a bad purchase and a lot of frustration.

I’ve crocheted with fringed yarn—it works, but it’s tiring and takes some practice.
I also didn’t use fringed yarn for every row, and that worked out pretty well.
The only downside is that unraveling it isn’t really possible—but you can’t see the mistakes either.
Here are two examples of my work with fringed yarn; it looks great, and I have more in the works.

Fringe yarn was all the rage a few years ago. I liked the color gradient with the berry tones, so I knitted a scarf out of it. But I never wore it because the fringes kept tickling my neck and face. I could only knit it in garter stitch because you can’t see any pattern anyway with all the fringe. Today, I’d only use fringe yarn for decorative pillows because it has a nice “shaggy look.”

I tried crocheting with it to no avail—it didn’t work even with a large hook and a carried-along thread. Knitting is certainly easier, but I also prefer smoother yarns.
