Hello, tomorrow is Mother’s Day. A day that many celebrate, while others scoff at it or reject it… much like Valentine’s Day.
I’m busy preparing for tomorrow, and as I was kneading the dough for the bread, my thoughts wandered far back into the past.
When we were little, my father would take us out very early on Mother’s Day toward the woods. My mother was allowed to sleep in late that day; over and over again, as we were getting dressed and ready, we’d whisper “shh” quietly. We’d pick a big bouquet of daisies for her and “surprise” her with it. Every year....
Later, my father took my children out and carried on this tradition. It always made me very happy.
Do you have memories of this day, too? Of your childhood with your parents? Of special moments with your children?
Hi, when I was little, I used to make something for my mother or draw her a picture. On Mother’s Day, my father and I would also pick a bouquet of flowers for her in our garden.
Later, when I was older, there would be a hand-crocheted shawl or a hand-knitted sweater, an embroidered blanket, or something similar.
I often baked a heart-shaped cake, too.
Since I unfortunately don’t have children of my own and my mother passed away several years ago, tomorrow there will only be a beautiful bouquet of flowers for her grave. I enjoy looking back on those wonderful times.
I hope you all have a wonderful day tomorrow, too.
Warm regards
Marina
You have such lovely memories.
For us, Mother’s Day was for a long time a day when all of us (we’re five siblings) would gather at our parents’ house and spend time together.
My mother loved having everyone together. That wasn’t something we could take for granted anymore after we’d all moved out.
We’d then have a sort of potluck party at her place, with cake, pasta salad, and things like that.
Those were good times.
You see, that’s exactly what I say to everyone who says, “Oh, we don’t need Mother’s Day; we should think of our mothers on other days too, etc.” Memories like these are simply unforgettable, and without special days like this, life would be monotonous—because every day would be the same. You don’t have to turn it into a big commercial event, but a few flowers you picked yourself, a homemade cake, or just a little extra time… that’s nice, isn’t it!
My memory’s a bit fuzzy on this one, but I do remember that we made something at school—we were allowed to take it home and give it to Mom as a gift. She was always happy to receive homemade gifts.
Tomorrow it’s time to go dancing again. We’re going together. I bought a little plant pot for my mom, with white flowers, and there’s a red wooden heart in the middle. Then I’ll treat her to coffee and cake, along with a big hug.
Monday is my parents’ wedding anniversary—we’ll have Merci chocolates, and the four of us will go out to eat together. It’s going to be great.
Wishing all moms, grandmas, aunts, and everyone else a wonderful Mother’s Day!
My oldest was about 4 years old when she once hopped into bed with us early on Mother’s Day and said to her dad: “Right, Dad? We’re not going to tell Mom yet that it says ‘My dear Mom’ on the heart” (it had been a cake).* :-))) Of course, I didn’t hear a thing ;-):-)))) From my youngest, I still have a little round chipboard box that she once made for me for Mother’s Day; it was decorated with star-shaped pasta and alphabet pasta.
My mom was totally against Mother’s Day and didn’t want it mentioned at all, but I know that in elementary school we had to draw a picture for it to give to our moms. So I obediently drew one too, gave it to my mom that very same day, and told her I’d been forced to do it. 🤣🤣
We laughed about it often later on, but she told me once that she actually went to school because of it. And I’d been wondering why we didn’t have to draw or do crafts anymore.
Later in high school, that wasn’t the norm anyway, which I found just as strange—that school was more than a bit austere and stern.
