Is batik not your thing?

Yes, dear Josefa, I’ve actually had a project like this in mind for quite some time. However, I’ve put it on the back burner because it’s more of a fall project.

The idea: I’d bought some silk yarn that, when I looked at it in daylight, turned out to be too bright for my taste (pink instead of fuchsia).  I’m now going to knit a simple top out of it and then transform it into a four-color top using (already purchased) batik dyes in fuchsia, blackberry, and eggplant.

I’ve tried batik exactly once—in a group project at my school. That was in 5th or 6th grade, and I remember it well, so I know it’s just not my thing.
Even though you can create some really cool effects with it.
I’d also be curious to know who still does batik these days.
Maybe things have changed a bit since my school project. 

Back when we were in school, there weren’t any gradient yarns yet, and tie-dyeing was the only—and easiest—way to make clothing multicolored......

Schools still do batik. We did that two years ago as part of a sewing machine club.

But there are also some really cool wrapping techniques. I saw that once. I’m all thumbs and can’t do that kind of thing. I can’t even imagine batik-dyeing a knitted top right now. That makes me all the more excited for fall.
