...this is also going into the box for the children's charity. I trimmed the seam allowances during the coronation :-) Garden shears work best for this—they're easy on your hands and joints.

The cut, frayed seams are done that way on purpose?

Yeah, Petra, that’s how it’s done. Google “Ragtime quilts”—you’ll see some real beauties. It’s really tiring if you don’t have the right scissors for cutting into the seams, because you have to cut pretty close to the seam without cutting all the way through. Usually, a Ragtime quilt is washed after sewing and then put in the dryer; that makes the open seams curl up even more beautifully.

I really like the open-edge look, too. It takes a lot of concentration not to cut into the seam. And the dust and lint….
But the result is worth it. The quilt is sure to turn out beautiful.

I hadn’t heard of Ragtime before—very interesting. And you’re right, it turned out beautifully once again!

you’re always teaching us enthusiasts something new! I didn’t even know the term “ragtime.” But even without Googling it, I took a look at the picture first and found the piece very interesting and exciting because of the snipped seam edges. I would have found it boring to just sew squares together to make a quilt. But the fringes really liven up the quilt. Though all that snipping does mean a lot of work went into it. The future owner can look forward to such an original quilt.
