what characteristics must a type of wool or yarn have to be suitable for baby clothes?

Hello everyone,

In my opinion, a yarn suitable for baby clothing needs to have the following qualities:

- it must not shed fluff/lint 
- it has to be durable
- it has to be easy to wash
- it should have as few chemical “off-gassings” as possible—in other words, it should not smell or taste chemical (yes, taste too, because a baby is almost guaranteed to suck on it)
- it should be available in many colors so you can add some variety 
- ideally, it should be workable with needle sizes 2.5–4 
- it should not be scratchy (everyone perceives that differently, of course, but for my taste it should not be scratchier than sock yarn)
- it should ideally have a high natural-fiber content and only a low synthetic-fiber content

That’s a very good summary—I have nothing to add to that.

If the yarn is to be used for baby clothes, it’s also important that it’s breathable.
Otherwise, I agree with Nina’s comments. ☺
