Special dialect words

Here, for example, the older folks still say “haisdn Mee” and “daisdn Mee”
in standard German—this side of the Main and that side of the Main :-) But here, most locals also say “Mee”; starting around Aschfeenburg, it’s “Moi,” and from Bamberg to around Eltmann, it’s “Ma”—all referring to the beautiful Main River.

As a Hessian, I say “hibbe unn dribbe vom Maa.”

Well, as a Hessian, you must know what a “Kolder” is—my mother-in-law once tried to trick me. We were visiting, and I was feeling a bit chilly on the pergola. She said, “Go inside and get yourself a ‘Kolder.’” I went in, grabbed one from the couch, and came right back out. She looked at me in surprise and asked how I knew what a “Kolder” was. I just said, “Well, I’m 50% Hessian—I was born in the district of Wetzlar and lived there until I was almost 6 years old.” :-)
