Cotton Blouse Fabric + Flutter Sleeves

Dear users, dear designers,
what qualities does a cotton blouse fabric need? Can you use just any cotton fabric for that? The ones in the picture are apparently flutter sleeves. What’s the difference between those and cut-on sleeves?

You can actually sew blouses from any fabric that drapes loosely and lightly—this could be cotton, viscose, or even satin. It always depends on what the blouse is intended for. After all, there are also blouses made of lace, silk, etc. In the summer, I’d prefer to wear a blouse made of batiste—a very light, almost sheer cotton fabric that comes in both lace-woven and plain versions.
Cut-on sleeves are constructed so that the sleeve is extended from the shoulder and cut in an arc across the shoulder. A flutter sleeve is very often cut in a raglan style, meaning it’s cut right *at the collar* and the shoulder is integrated there; unlike the cut-on sleeve, the flutter sleeve widens as it goes down, so that it sticks out like a little wing.

Best regards, Inge

Dear Josfa,

I’m also interested in the answer to this question. Maybe a fabric expert will chime in.
I sometimes wonder if it might be better to choose a fabric that’s 50% cotton and 50% xy instead of a 100% cotton fabric. Maybe it won’t wrinkle as much, but it’ll still have the breathable qualities of cotton.

Best regards, Ina

Dear Josefa, it seems Inge replied faster than I could send my post. But now I’m a little wiser. Thanks, Inge. Personally, I think I’d prefer batiste for a really hot summer. Let’s see when I come across some. You don’t really know if a fabric suits you, if you like how it feels against your skin, if it’s opaque enough, etc., until you’ve sewn something out of it.

I think I absolutely have to visit a fabric store this spring! I need to feel the fabric. I find it very difficult to buy fabric online. You have to work your way through different qualities.

Best regards, Ina
