Difference between wool and sock yarn?

what is the general difference between wool and sock yarn?

Sock yarn is—as a rule!—made up of 75% virgin wool and 25% polyester.
Wool should be 100% wool 😉

"Sock" generally refers to a yarn weight—typically around 400 meters per 100 grams. Yarn specifically designed for socks is superwash-treated and contains a percentage of polyester. This makes the yarn durable enough to withstand wear and frequent washing.
You can also use sock yarn for other projects, but for socks, you should only use sock yarn that has the properties mentioned above.
Recently, plastic-free sock yarns have also become available, either with other additives or none at all; many people swear by them, but ultimately, these socks aren’t nearly as durable.
