Storing Thread Spools and Bobbins

Hi everyone,

I’d like to get my thread spools and bobbins organized. Right now, they’re all jumbled up in a plastic box, and I don’t like that.

I’d like to store the thread spools and bobbins together by color, so everything is nice and organized. Do you have any tips for me?

How do you organize yours? Could you take a photo?

Thank you so much.

Best regards, Ina

Hmmmm, I always think it looks great in promotional photos when they’re strung up on the wall or something like that, but first of all, they get really dusty, and second, you need a lot of free wall space.
It’s pretty difficult, which is why it looks just like yours at my place, too.

For the standard threads, I have a stand on the shelf above my sewing machine; I keep my bobbins in special bobbin boxes, just like you’d like, Ina. Unfortunately, there’s nothing decent available in stores for storing bobbins and thread spools together—it always ends up in total chaos.
I keep my large cones for the coverstitch and overlock machines in boxes in the closet, sorted by color. I tidy them up every now and then when I’m organizing, but by the time I switch to a different color, the box is a total mess again :-)

Best regards, Inge

I have a stand in a drawer, so they’re protected from dust.
And I use these bobbin clips to keep the bobbins and spools together.

Hi Ina,

I repurposed an old pinboard from my children.
Drilled angled holes into it (honestly, it was my dad), wooden rods from the euro shop and wood glue.
Additional spools of thread can be secured with pins.

Done. And everything is tidy.
The pinboard leans against the wall. If necessary, I can put it away too.
And dust isn’t a problem either.
I can always find a suitable piece of fabric to lay over it.

Best, Petra

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your suggestions and photos. Everyone has to find what works best for their own situation. Since my sewing machine is in the attic and I only have slanted walls there, I can’t mount anything on the wall. That would be nice, of course, because you could see everything at a glance, just like with Inge or Petra.

I also really like Hundsstern’s version. Here, the sewing threads are in the drawer (which I also have) and protected from dust. However, you can’t see the colors as well that way because you’re looking down on them from above. I also think the little clips for threading the bobbin and thread spool are great. You could also thread them onto a rod that you’d attach somewhere. When needed, you’d just pull off a thread spool and bobbin. But they’d just end up gathering dust, too.

Petra’s repurposed pinboard also serves its purpose. Everything is nice and organized, and you can cover it up. But it takes up floor space. And it needs to be sturdy, too. I only have shelves under the sloped ceiling. I’ll have to figure out how to incorporate it there somehow.

I’ll keep thinking about it and eventually show you how I’ve organized my sewing thread and bobbins. In any case, thank you so much for your tips and suggestions.

Best regards, Ina

Hi Ina,
how about a basic sewing thread assortment? They always come with both the spools and the bobbins in the corresponding colors.
Best wishes, Petra

Dear Petra, I have too many individual spools of thread that I’ve bought for sewing projects. They just pile up over time.

I’ll probably ask my brother if he can build something for me. The plan is a thread spool holder that I’ll attach to the side of a 30 cm wide shelf. You can’t buy one with those exact dimensions. If the rods are a little longer, the bobbins will fit on there too.

Best regards, Ina
