Yes, you can, BUT you should leave the thread a little longer when weaving in the ends; otherwise, if you pull on the right end, the button will come off again in a flash.

I sew on most of my buttons with a sewing machine—especially on my bedding. It’s so much faster that way. I should mention, though, that my sewing machine is ready to go 90% of the time.

YES, it works really well with a zigzag stitch in the same spot.
I always liked doing this when there were lots of buttons.
And secured on the back with wood glue.

My sewing machine has a special stitch for that ;). But they have to be those disc buttons with two holes.
