St. Nicholas Traditions

Dear users, dear authors,
how do you celebrate St. Nicholas Day? Do you have St. Nicholas traditions that are important to you?

Not yet—but now that Leo is 3, it’s slowly time to start introducing some nice traditions again.

We used to have a booked, costumed St. Nicholas come by fairly often; he’d bring a gift for all the kids after reading aloud, in the presence of Knecht Ruprecht, what we’d gotten up to over the course of the year 😂
That was always really nice. If no one came, we kids would put our boots outside the door the evening before and hope for a tasty chocolate St. Nicholas and a few nuts.
Once, we were even clever enough to put out not just one shoe per child, but ALL the shoes we owned. Mixed up, so St. Nicholas wouldn’t notice they were all duplicates 😁 Unfortunately, St. Nicholas was smarter than us and saw through the trick.

Sadly, there aren’t enough kids in the family to book a St. Nicholas.

Other than that, we don’t have any traditions. We enjoy the day and make something delicious to eat.

The traditions tend to come more around Christmas.

We put our boots outside the door, and they’re always filled.

Other than that, we don’t do much for St. Nicholas Day, since it’s our son-in-law’s birthday. Of course, on that day, the birthday boy is the most important person. 

Unfortunately, all our traditions have faded away—our grandchildren are all grown up except for one, and she’s usually out with the Scouts on St. Nicholas Day and, sadly, lives a good 40 km away. Sometimes I think that kids grow up so fast, and we really should enjoy the time when they’re little and the whole thing is still a huge mystery to them.
