Well-aged wool

Dear users, dear authors,
what’s the oldest unprocessed ball of yarn you have?
How about finding a relaxing project that goes well with this ball of yarn?

🤣🤣
What a funny thread title! It’s right up there with “well-aged steak,” isn’t it?
Since I only got back into crocheting and knitting not all that long ago, I don’t have any mummified yarn lying around—the oldest ball is at most 2 years old.
But it’s a different story with fabrics—I’ve been sewing on and off, so I have some treasures here that have been sitting around for more than 10 years. Some teddy bear fabrics I just bought to have on hand, and then I didn’t make a single teddy bear for ages. Other impulse buys were just beautiful, but I don’t have any plans for them yet. And still others were bought specifically for a certain sewing pattern and are just waiting for me to finally get started.

I don’t knit nearly enough for that wool to really take root here. If there’s ever any left over, I usually give it to my daughter, who then uses it up.
As for fabric, I rarely have large pieces lying around—they’re mostly scraps from things I’ve sewn. I usually buy fabric based on specific projects.

Best regards, Inge

I got this title from WollwunderPetra. She came up with it.

The shop has lots of teddy bears in all kinds of crafts. Maybe you’d like to spend a little time on one of them this weekend?

The title is really funny :-)
I still have some yarn, but I can’t say how old it really is.
It’s yarn that belonged to my mother, who passed away over 10 years ago. Since she also loved to knit and crochet, she always had a large stash of yarn. So I got the “collecting and hunting” bug from her ;-)
I kept the yarn back then, but I don’t really have a plan yet for what to make with it.
Maybe a big blanket someday, or several smaller items, like a scarf, a hat, a soul warmer, etc.

@Veronika - what do you call fabric treasures that have been sitting on a shelf for a very long time? Is there a term for that too?

I still have some wool lying around that’s over 30 years old. I once started knitting a sweater with it, but it ended up unfinished in a drawer. Eleven years ago, we moved into the house, and that’s when I found quite a few things in the basement.

Only one yarn has deteriorated on me so far. It was somehow sticky when I found it.

I started knitting a lot again in 2013, when my grandson was on the way. And ever since, I’ve been buying far too much yarn, simply because it’s beautiful and soft.

And because I write down when, where, and how much yarn I bought (Ravelry does that quite well), I still have yarn in my cupboards from 2014.

I’m sure it’ll speak to me someday. I do keep reorganizing everything regularly. It’s funny what you end up discovering.

Here’s my first purchase from the factory outlet ... that’s how it all began in 2013. The circled yarn is still there and waiting to find its purpose. The rest has been used up, or in the case of the cozy dark brown one, I sold it this year.

I have no idea what to call these vintage fabrics. But I think that before I come up with the right name for them, I’d rather go through them sometime and sort out what I definitely won’t be using anymore. Since I’ve packed them neatly and tightly into boxes, they’re taking up quite a bit of space.

Nice title 😅
Off the top of my head, I can think of a single skein of brown tweed wool that I used to make a jacket about 43 years ago... but it’s really itchy, so I’ve always avoided using it until now...

Yes, it’s a funny title—about 40 years ago, I wanted to knit a sweater for my husband, but unfortunately, I never got around to it. I bought the yarn back then at 3 Pagen. Over time, I used individual balls for children’s mittens or socks… but one ball is still sitting in my yarn box 🙈
