Dear users, dear authors,
what do you think is the ugliest fashion trend of all time?

Off the top of my head:
Back in the ’90s or 2000s, it was fashionable for a while to wear a skirt over jeans. Sooo awful :D
There are probably even worse ones. I’m looking forward to the other replies :)

Shoulder pads—I took those out of all my jackets.

Well, there have been more than enough ugly fashion trends over the last 50 years :-) Shoulder pads—you looked like a boxer in disguise— neon-colored sportswear—especially in color combinations like purple-green or orange-purple-red-green—it looked absolutely dreadful. Then there’s something I’ve always considered a fashion faux pas: when a size 52 woman struts through town in crop-top leggings—she looks like a sausage on two legs. That was a thing in the ’80s and ’90s, and you still see it today. When I see some of these looks, I wonder: Don’t they have a mirror at home, or someone to tell them, “Hey, you can’t go out on the street looking like that”?

Love, Inge

Low-rise jeans—they only look good on women with perfect figures. Even a single extra gram on the hips, and it just looks embarrassing.

Skirts over pants and shoulder pads are my favorites too!
Everything else really is mostly just figure-dependent and can occasionally even look good.

Well, I think the ’80s produced great music but terrible fashion and hairstyles. Neon and shoulder pads aren’t really my thing either. But both are making a comeback right now :D.

Neon piping as an eye-catcher is back in style too. But shoulder pads... well... I think I’ll pass on that new trend :D

Best regards,
Sonja

When I first got together with my husband, white socks were all the rage—worn with every outfit and for every occasion.
My family and I aren’t very tall, and we’re all pretty blonde. My husband is tall with dark hair and has a slightly darker complexion than us pale-faced folks.
My niece was 3 years old at the time and staying with my parents when I showed up for the first time with “the new guy”; my brother and sister-in-law were out.
Of course, they wanted to ask the kid about Aunt Veronika’s boyfriend, and the answer to “What was he like?” came right away: “Tall and black, wearing white socks.” 🤣🤣

I think neon is absolutely awful, and I don’t like the leopard print look at all either. I’ve always steered clear of both over the years.

Besides fashion, there were other “fashion faux pas” too… we wouldn’t walk around like that today. You can see the evidence clearly in the photos in my photo album…

—blue glitter eyeshadow
—“Angela Davis curls” (i.e., a perm that looks like a helmet)
—carrot pants

Well, fashion is a funny thing. I liked the shoulder pads because, visually speaking, they made me look better. There was also a brightly colored, crinkly tracksuit made of balloon silk (or whatever it was) in turquoise, pink, and rose (all in one suit)… for every member of my family. There’s a photo of us flying kites. The whole family (Grandma, Grandpa, parents, kids) lined up side by side, and everyone is wearing one of those rustling tracksuits. That was just the thing back then!

Love, Ina

This isn’t about clothes, but do you remember how young people—and some adult women—used to walk around with such over-the-top makeup in the early 2000s?
And it wasn’t exactly professional-looking, either. The main thing was that it was heavy and colorful. Thick, bold eyeliner all around the eyes, eyeshadow in every color of the rainbow applied heavily... and the makeup! I was still too young for that back then, but people must have had to scrape that heavy makeup (which really stood out) off with an ice scraper at night 🤣🤣

The boys and young men were also really, really bad—they wore their pants hanging really low, hip-hop gangster style, sometimes even below their butts, so you could almost see their entire underwear.
That was “my time,” but I thought it was absolutely terrible even back then, and I’m glad that trend and that sight are over.

Krea Tina, we used to call those pants “hamster pants” :-)
Yeah, I had that mop-top hairstyle too—my daughters always called it a “bird’s nest” because my daughter’s cockatiel loved to snuggle in there and help me tidy up and clean the apartment in the mornings; he wouldn’t let me shoo him away. :-)

Best regards, Inge

Josefa, I admit that I’m a bit of a weirdo, and that sometimes it’s even visible .-))))))) ;-))))) Back then, it was on my head, and today I wear it visibly around my neck, because my hubby gave me a beautiful kingfisher pendant on a silver chain

Best regards, Inge

When it came to makeup, we were pretty out there in the ’70s, too. Colorful and lots of it! Eyeshadow all the way up to the eyebrows and loooads of eyeliner.
And I loved Alice Cooper—for a while, I even went to school wearing makeup just like he did on stage. I spent all my allowance on eyeliner. 🤣

I don't like those jeans with holes and rips.

Hmm, those ripped jeans remind me of a story I have to tell you :-))) My oldest daughter used to live with her grandparents for a while to help them out a bit. Back then, she was still training to be a dressmaker and had designed a pair of jeans with holes in them; she’d secured the holes well so they wouldn’t fray any further, etc. Grandma did the laundry, and the jeans were in the load. When Grandma hung up the jeans and saw the holes, she thought she had to patch them—she couldn’t let the girl run around like that. No sooner said than done—she put the jeans under the sewing machine and neatly patched up the holes. Oh man, all hell broke loose after that :-))))) My mom called me, completely frustrated, and complained about my oldest daughter, saying she’d given Grandma such a hard time for “patching” her jeans, I still have to grin today when I think about it, and whenever I see a pair of ripped jeans, I think, “Be glad you don’t know Grandma, because then those pants would be done for :-))) My oldest is still grumbling about it today whenever the topic comes up :-) Grandma did do the laundry, but she never did any mending or anything like that—the girl had to do that herself :-))

Love, Inge

... The classic... The grandma who sews the holes shut.
I don’t think your daughter is the first—or the last—"victim" :D

I had a pair of those hole-y pants just once. After I put my foot through the wrong hole the first three times, I never wore them again.
