Not for me, personally. I do make sure things go together and complement each other, but not every single detail.
My mom had mastered that. Coordinated clothes, matching jewelry, a matching handbag, and matching shoes. If she wore green, the green shoes came out of the closet. Everything always matched for her. She sewed her own clothes. Skirt, top, jacket, blouse... everything matched.
I love tone-on-tone, too, and since I sew everything myself, I make sure everything goes together—so I can go for a tone-on-tone look or even go *colorful* sometimes.
Not completely, since I almost always wear blue or black jeans, but the rest—my shirt, bag, shoes, and maybe some jewelry—has to match. That’s why I have a pretty full shoe closet; I can’t exactly wear turquoise moccasins with a pink shirt.
When it comes to jewelry, most of it is neutral—gold or silver—but I have a few colorful necklaces and bracelets, and of course those have to match the rest, too.
I like to be colorful, but not a haphazard mix of colors; if I’m wearing a bright pink top, then I’ll also have shoes and a handbag to match.
I’m more of an all-black kind of person :). Gray is okay, too, as are muted colors. I also like batik, but only in black, gray, etc. I usually wear black.
This topic really reminds me of my former law professor from college.
I don’t even remember her name anymore (after only 11–12 years), but I still remember exactly what she looked like:
gray shoes, gray pants, a gray top under a gray jacket… all matching her short gray hair.
Always. Every week, just gray, gray, gray.
And the lecture was just as “gray”—in other words, very monotonous :D
Personally, I do make sure my clothes go together somehow, but to be honest, I usually dress a bit more “colorfully.” I don’t own shoes in all those colors—just a few pairs—and my pants are always jeans or black.
Hats off to everyone who really puts effort into this and puts together matching outfits :)
