When I started crocheting again, I didn’t have a single one left, so I bought a whole set—after all, you always need a few different sizes.
Since then, I’ve realized that I don’t need the really thick or the really thin ones at all, but I’ve already used all the others, so it was probably cheaper this way than buying them all individually.
When I first started crocheting, I was able to try out my mother-in-law’s colorful collection.
Since I found the Clover Amours to be the most comfortable, I stuck with them and only bought a new size when I needed it for a project. That way, I didn’t have to spend tens of euros all at once on a new hobby. If it had been a very inexpensive brand, I might have done things differently.
Maybe a set would have been cheaper by now, but that’s okay. I don’t think I have a single hook that hasn’t been used at least once.
I’ve inherited so many crochet hooks from my grandmother and my mother that I have way too many. The old hooks are all made of metal and very durable.
Of course, I’ve also bought some myself recently—the ones with handles. But eventually, those break, snap, come apart, or get sticky.
I think I’ll stick with my old ones; I don’t crochet all that much anyway, and I’m happy with them.
For knitting, I treated myself to a set of needle tips a few years ago. The wooden tips come with different cables in a nice bag. I really enjoy using them.
I still have so many of those old, thin metal crochet hooks, but I just can’t use them anymore. They make my fingers hurt so much. But as a fan of “Ostalgie,” I’ve kept them anyway.
I now have a crochet hook set with handles (my hands thank me for it), and I’m very happy with it. Sizes 2.0 to 6.0. I also have a plastic crochet hook set, ranging from 2.0 to 8.0. I hardly ever use the thicker ones, but the colors are so beautifully translucent.
For my filet crochet yarn, I bought a special, high-quality, expensive size 1.75 hook with a protective cap. I love it because it fits so well in my hand.
I have both.... Starting with my grandma’s ancient crochet hooks, the ones with the wooden handles. I have a few without handles; they’re in my knitting basket because they’re great for picking up stitches from the edges—just crochet on the stitches, slide them onto the shaft (about 20 stitches fit on mine), and then transfer the stitches twisted onto the knitting needle.
And then there was a set I got as a “gift” when I ordered xx€ worth of yarn… They’re not bad—they have plastic handles and feel pretty good in your hand. So far, though, I’ve only used three of them; the others are still in their packaging.
My takeaway: only buy the ones you really need—7 of the 10-piece set are still sitting around unused.
Oh, I almost forgot—I also have one with a light; I just had to try it out... for dark amigurumi... The results were rather mediocre. The handle is way too thick, but I guess the “electronics” have to be stowed somewhere 😂
